Today in Comics History: E.C. Segar
Today in 1894, Elzie Crisler Segar was born in Chester, Illinois. As E.C. Segar, he would grow up to create the comic strip “Thimble Theatre,” which would eventually star the character Popeye the Sailor. In 1971, the National Cartoonist Society created the Elzie Segar Award in his honor to recognize people who make a unique and outstanding contribution to the profession of cartooning. Last month, Fantagraphics Books released their first volume of a reprint series of “Thimble Theatre” starting with Popeye’s introduction in 1928. (Sources: E.C.
